U.K Nurse sacked for discussing Christianity & offering to pray with patients before operations
Sister Sarah Kuteh, a nurse with 15 years’ experience was sacked for
discussing Christianity and offering to pray with patients before their
operations. Kuteh, who's a mother-of-three, was dismissed for breaching
guidelines, even though her job involved asking people preparing for
surgery about their religion.
Recalling how she was suspended and escorted from Darent Valley hospital in Dartford, Kent, Kuteh said: ‘It was embarrassing for me – and painful after all I had done in my years as a nurse. I was told I couldn’t even speak to my colleagues. All I had done was to nurse from my heart. How could it be harmful to tell someone about Jesus?’
She admitted she may have spoken to a few patients without their express permission when she first began the job, but was more careful after a warning in April 2016 that there had been complaints. In June, She was ‘shocked’ when they told her that three further complaints had been made, after which she was told to stop assessing patients and was suspended a few days later. She was sacked in August after an investigation, and her appeal rejected.
The bosses at Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust however insist that her discussions were unwanted and this had upset patients. They also claim that Kuteh failed to heed warnings that she was being unprofessional.
She is now suing the hospital for unfair dismissal, describing her sacking as ‘disproportionate and punitive’

Ultra modern shopping mall in Benin gutted by fire
Fire gutted the only ultra
modern shopping mall in Benin, Edo State last night. Managing Director of the
Super Mart Mr Philip Edigin said that the fire started at about 12 mid
night.
He disclosed that all effort to get the State fire service to come to their rescue proved abortive as the fire service told him they have no diesel to work. He said he was later able to get help from the Nigeria Air force fire service, IDSL NPDC and before the State fire service came at about 6am.
Meanwhile a supervisor in the State Fire Service Mr Franklin Agbonlahor appealed to government for urgent upgrade of facilities and equipment of the fire service. Edo State Governor, Obaseki has ordered full investigation into the incident. The governor, who disclosed this on Sunday when he paid an on the spot inspection to the mall also said investigation would be conducted into the activities of the state fire service. He described the damage done to the mall as catastrophic and a major disaster.
"This incident happening at this time of the year is a catastrophe. I have asked for written report and investigation into the cause of the fire. We will also investigate the claim by an official of the state Fire service on the allegation of lack of equipment. Because I understand that trucks were distributed by the NDDC and the State Government during the last administration".
The governor said that to avert future fire disaster in Super Mart and even vehicles, all vehicles and super Mart would henceforth be made to have fire extinguishers.

PDP needs surgery, says Sheriff-led faction
The Peoples Democratic Party under the
leadership of Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff on Sunday canvassed for the need to
reposition the party through a major political surgery.
The party said in a statement signed by the factional PDP Acting National Publicity Secretary Mr. Bernard Mikko, in Abuja.
He recalled that there was a general
consensus that PDP was undergoing stress and political hemorrhage
arising from structural impunity, indiscipline and lack of respect for
rule of law.
Mikko said that such action had
compromised the party’s unity, strength and loss of focus on the key
values that engendered public trust and electoral victory for PDP over a
decade.
“To reverse these trends, a major
political surgery has to be undertaken to get the party out of the grip
of some selfish, lawless, and undisciplined individuals.
“ The individuals who have used our
platform to public reckoning, but now want to make the party an
exclusive property of theirs.
“The PDP as you know is the only
formidable political institution that has remained so without change of
name, slogan or nomenclature.
“The weakness and schisms within the
hierarchy of our party today is as a result of violent disregard of our
constitution, ethics and rules of engagements of divergent opinions
within and outside the party,’’ he said.
Mikko said that politics is about building consensus and legitimacy to promote unity through equity, fairness and justice.
“The case before the court of Appeal,
Port Harcourt division is essentially to determine the legality or
otherwise of the Sen. Ahmed Makarfi led national caretaker committee
which has no place in the PDP’s constitution,’’ he said.
Mikko said that the faction of the party
was confident that the Appeal Court would cure the misgivings and error
of judgment for which “Makarfi-led caretaker contraption is claiming
legality.’’

Hollywood clubs play Nigerian songs — Adekunle Gold
Music artiste, Adekunle Kosoko, aka Adekunle Gold, shares fond memories from his recent trip to Los Angeles
Where’s the most interesting place you’ve visited recently?
That should be the movie capital of the world, Hollywood, which is in Los Angeles, California.
Why did you visit Hollywood?
I went there to attend a concert called Ankara Festival. I had always looked forward to visiting Los Angeles, and this was a pleasant opportunity to do so.
What were the highlights of your visit?
I visited the famous Hollywood Walk of
Fame, and I saw first-hand, the names of all the great stars there. I
was impressed, and I hoped that someday in the future, my name would
also be there. I also saw the homes of a lot of wealthy stars.
How was the weather as of the time you visited?
It was okay. It was neither too cold nor too hot.
What impressed you most about Hollywood?
The ambiance of Hollywood is
breathtaking. That alone makes it a favourite tourist destination. There
were a lot of interesting places to visit and see things for oneself.
Did you try any local food while there?
I don’t think Americans have local
dishes; it’s the same burger and other types of fast food. I spent three
days there and I basically ate Nigerian dishes.
Is there any similarity between Nigeria and Hollywood?
I saw my Nigerian friends and I also met with people, who are not Nigerians, wearing ankara. Apart from that, there was nothing else. The difference between both places is so clear!
What was the first thing that struck you when you got off the airplane?
I didn’t have to look for my luggage, it was already waiting for me, and I found that very remarkable.
Most times you are dressed in ankara and adire fabrics. What was the reaction of Americans to your dressing?
It was more about my music than my
dressing because they enjoyed my music. As a matter of fact, I met some
new fans who told me that my music is amazing.
Do the people there know anything about Nigeria?
Of course! I partied in a few clubs and a lot of Nigerian songs were played .
Did you experience any culture shock?
It was more about the orderliness of the
place. Everything is properly done and that’s so different from
Nigeria. That’s the same thing one notices everywhere outside Nigeria,
especially in the western world. Even on the roads, traffic rules were
strictly adhered to; nobody dared switch lanes anyhow. I also found the
peaceful atmosphere and the security amazing.
What are the things you think Nigeria can learn from Hollywood?
The sanity on the road and the ability
to maximise the opportunities in the town as a tourist attraction. We
have a lot of interesting places in Nigeria that can be developed as
tourist sites. If America can be making so much money off Hollywood,
then, we can ‘package’ our own places as well.
How would you describe the hospitality you experienced during your visit?
Everything was amazing. I had a great time and there were no issues at all.
Do you prefer travelling alone or in a group?
There’s no fun in travelling alone. I prefer to go with friends.
What’s the best travel advice you can give?
If you’re travelling to a new place,
always endeavour to try their food. There was nothing really to try in
Hollywood, and that’s why I didn’t eat anything new while there. You
should also meet new people, take pictures and have fun. As for me, I’m
always with my camera wherever I go. And lastly, you should carry out
extensive research before your trip.
Where’s your dream travel location?
That would be Seychelles, Las Vegas, and Nevada.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the annual programme which had ended was a mountain of divine encounter for salvation, healing and deliverance and a time of astounding miracles.
The yearly programme was also a time of testimonies of liberation in all facets of human existence that focused on afflicted, battered, beaten and tattered destinies as a result of pains, pangs and crying.
He also encouraged Christians in the aspect of giving, adding that anyone who keys into kingdom investment covenant would overcome hardship.
“Any one who keys into the kingdom investments covenant will overcome the gross darkness that awaits the world.

Mrs Deborah Peters, a member said that Shiloh was a refreshing programme that was meant to make every Christian to experience divine breakthrough and increase in their lives.
Peters advised Christians to be open minded with their concerns at this period and all times so that they would encounter God’s visitation.
“We have to make sacrifices of giving like Papa pointed out so that we will encounter increase, breakthrough, unending grace, protection and even deliverance.
“For us to gain all of these, we have to, with the help of the theme of Shiloh open up to God to have his way in us.

Gov escapes death as 200 die in Akwa Ibom church collapse
The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr.
Udom Emmanuel, narrowly escaped death on Saturday as the building of
Reigners’ Bible Church Int’l Inc, along Uyo Village Road, Uyo, the state
capital, collapsed during service.
The incident left about 200 worshippers
dead. Sources said it took the efforts of the governor’s security
officers to whisk him away to safety. He was said to have sustained a
minor injury.
SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that the
governor was in the church attending the ordination of the church’s
Presiding Pastor, Bishop Elect Akan Weeks, when the building gave way
few minutes before offering period.
One of the aides, who rescued the governor, was said to have died at a nearby hospital where he was rushed to.
A security officer, who did not want to be named, said many dignitaries who accompanied the governor to the church also died.
Our correspondent gathered that the
Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Etekamba Umoren, also shattered
his head in the incident. He was said to have been taken to an
undisclosed hospital in the state.
SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ekerette Udoh, also sustained serious injury.
It was gathered that construction works
on a section where the ordination held were rushed because of Saturday’s
event. The church has an estimated 10,000-seater capacity. Two cranes
belonging to construction giant, Julius Berger, were used to clear the
debris.
A clash was averted between the police and some residents as the latter tried to calm frayed nerves.
The state Commissioner for Works,
Ephraim Inyang, refused to speak with journalists when he was
approached. He ordered them to leave the place.
Mrs. Yenime Ekpo, who is a mother to one
of the victims, Tony Brown, 46 with six children, said they were
worshiping in the church when the building collapsed.
She stated that Brown was trapped in the rubble for many hours along with others before she was rescued.
Saying she was unsure of her son’s
survival, Ekpo noted that they were not members of the church but only
went to witness the ordination.
Also, a student of the University of
Uyo, Department of Communication Arts, Uduak Effiong, said she lost
three of her course mates to the incident.
She stated that when the building collapsed, a pillar fell upon a woman and tore her body.
She said, “I saw over 100 dead bodies.
These were the ones close to me. From my estimation, more than 300
people might have died as people came from other churches in all parts
of the state, including government-sponsored praised singers with
uniforms to attend the programme. For some of us that escaped, we only
did by the special grace of God.”
Another student of the University of
Uyo, Jennifer Thomas, told our correspondent that one of her friends,
Blessing Linus, was trapped in the debris.
It was learnt that the iron used in
holding the roofing sheet was twice heavier than the block used for the
building. Security operatives cordoned the area and denied journalists
access.
Some members of the church seized the
identity card of our correspondent and his computer tablet, saying he
was a traitor as he tried to take pictures.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr.
Murtala Mani, who said he could not ascertain the number of those dead
or those trapped in the building, expressed sadness over the
development.
He said, ‘‘I am sorry about the entire situation.’’
The Chief Medical Director of the
University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Prof. Etete Peters, said of the 50
cases treated in the treatment, only one person died.
He said about 200 persons were brought to the hospital dead, adding that the hospital had never prepared for such an emergency.
He said, “We only lost one person in the
hospital except those that were brought dead. In circumstances like
this, we have been overwhelmed. We need help from government.
“Many victims are in private hospitals
and mortuaries scattered all over Uyo metropolis; we can’t really tell
how many people have died so far. We have over 200 persons in the
mortuaries. We do not have space as people are still being brought in.’’
“We have done our best to revive some
victims. Right now, we have over 50 cases we are attending to. This is
the first time we are witnessing such an incident.’’
At St. Athanasius Hospital Limited, a
nurse told our correspondent that one person was brought to the hospital
dead but the relatives were asked to take the corpse away.
In its reaction, the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria said it shared in the pain of the leadership and members of the church.
In a statement by its state Chairman,
Dr. Sylvanus Ukafia, the association urged all Pentecostal churches in
the state and in Nigeria to hold special prayers for the church on
Sunday (today).
It added, “All churches should take
special offerings for the medical assistance of all those injured and
send same to the Reigners’ Bible Church. Church members who can are also
urged to donate blood, where necessary, to those in the hospital and
make other donations as may be required in the course of the treatment
of those injured.’’
In its reaction, the state government
said a panel of enquiry would be constituted to ascertain the immediate
and remote factors leading to the collapse of the church building with a
view to forestall a reoccurrence.
A statement by the Chief Press Secretary
also noted that persons found to have compromised professional
standards in the construction of the building would be sanctioned.
It added, ‘‘His Excellency, the Governor
of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, was present at the church
service during the incident and thereafter personally supervised rescue
operations and evacuation of the injured to the hospital. The state
government will undertake the medical treatment of the victims.’’
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari on
Saturday congratulated Emmanuel, and his family on their lucky escape
from the collapse of the building of the Reigners Bible Church, Uyo.
The President through a statement by his
Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, also
conveyed to the governor and the people of the state, the deep sorrow of
his family, the government and the entire people of Nigeria over the
many deaths and injury recorded following the incident.

2 First class serving corp members die on Camp in 3 days
Tributes to the deceased corps member, Miss Ifedolapo Amoke Oladepo, who died in Kano NYSC orientation camp on November 29, flow like rivers of water.
According to one Sen Ajibolu Marcarony Yusuff, who appears to be a relation of the deceased, Ifedolapo called home five hours to her death and told her older sister, Mrs. Oyeyode Abimbola (a nurse) to start coming to her Kano orientation camp because, as alleged, the NYSC doctors were not giving enough care.
Yusuff said the late 26-year-old corps member who graduated with a First Class degree in Transport Management from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, was given injection at the orientation camp’s clinic, but that she called home to say that she had reacted to the injection, as she noticed visible rashes all over her body.
Later, Yusuff claimed, Ifedolapo called home to complain of tongue-twisting, and was reportedly given another injection.
Yusuff continued, “When a male doctor agreed to speak with her sister (Oyeyode Abimbola), he explained that Ifedolapo was having anaphylaxis (acute allergic reaction) and that they intended to place her under observation for an hour before transferring her to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.”
Yusuff claimed that it took about five
hours before the camp management transferred Ifedolapo to General
Hospital, Gwazo, instead of the AKTH as promised.
She allegedly became incommunicado, as she could no longer be reached on phone.
Thirteen hours later, the family allegedly received a call from the Kano State NYSC camp officials informing them of her death.
In reaction to the issue, the Head of the NYSC Press and Public Relations in Abuja, Mrs. Bosede
Aderibigbe, said that Ifedolapo was sick when she arrived the Kano orientation camp, and that she did not die of stress as her relations and friends thought.
In the same vein, another First Class
graduate of Petroleum Engineering from the University of Uyo, Mr. Ukeme
Monday, has died in Zamfara State orientation camp.
He reportedly died on Thursday, December 1, of yet-to-be-ascertained causes.
A classmate of his, one Mr. Patrick Immo, noted that Monday was a committed Christian worker in his local assembly, the Power City International.
Immo said the two of them had shopped together a few days to the orientation camp, and that they departed Uyo for their respective orientation camps on November 23.
“It was thus a rude shock to me when, on December 1, I heard that Monday had died,” Immo narrated.
In addition to his First Class certificate, friends said Monday also won four scholarships and other top academic prizes as a student.
BREAKING: Petrol tanker explosion kills 14 in Niger
A petrol tanker skidded off the road and exploded in central Nigeria, killing at least 14 people on Friday, witnesses have said.
They said eight houses were razed following the accident
which happened around 8:00 am (0700GMT) in the transit town of Tegina in
Niger state.“We buried 14 people including a six-month-old baby who died in the tanker explosion this morning,” said Muhammad Sani who took part in the rescue operation.
Eight more victims were taken to hospital with burns, two of them in “very critical condition” while eight homes were burnt in the inferno, said another resident Abdullahi Egiworo.
“We received reports of an accident involving a petrol tanker in Tegina this morning but we are still awaiting details,” Bitrus Max told AFP.
He said emergency officials were heading to the scene to assist in the evacuation of victims.
Accidents involving petrol tankers happen frequently on Nigeria’s poorly maintained roads because of speeding and disregard for traffic rules.
Last month, three people were killed when a petrol tanker collided with a trailer and exploded on a road linking Nigeria’s commercial hub of Lagos with the rest of the country.

50% children suffer physical abuse in school – UNICEF
The United Nations Children’s Fund said on Thursday that over 50 per cent of Nigerian children suffer physical violence in schools.
Ms Ladi Alabi, the Child Protection Specialist, UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, made the disclosure on Thursday at the ongoing Child Protection System Strengthening meeting in Gombe.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the meeting was at the instance of UNICEF with support of European Union, United Nations and other international organisations.
Alabi explained that the figures emanated from the survey conducted in 2014 by the National Population Commission, which states that Nigerian children suffer high prevalence of all forms of violence.
She said that a high percentage of children also suffered physical violence within the family setting and the immediate environment.
”Teachers are the most perpetrators of the first incidence of physical violence for children in Nigeria.
”Statistics shows that over 50 per cent of children in Nigeria suffer physical violence in schools.
”Also, 35.5 per cent of girls and 34.1 per cent of boys suffer physical violence within the family and immediate environment.
”So, parents and adult relatives are the most common perpetrators of physical violence in childhood,” she said.

BREAKING: Again, court denies IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, bail
A Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday dismissed the bail
applications filed by leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi
Kanu, and three others with whom he is being prosecuted by the Federal
Government for offences including treasonable felony and an act
preparatory to act of terrorism.
Justice Binta Nyako, ruling on the applications filed by the four defendants, held that they were not deserving as most of the charges preferred against were “ordinarily not bailable”.
Justice John Tsoho, who was handling the case before Kanu accused him of bias, had also refused to grant bail to the accused persons.
The case was transferred to Justice Nyako on the account of
Kanu’s allegation and all the accused were re-arraigned before the judge
on November 8.
The lawyers to the four accused persons subsequently argued their clients’ bail application on November 17.
Ruling on Thursday, Kustice Nyako held that she had no reason to “deviate” from the earlier “findings” of Justice Tsoho.
Justice Nyako ruled on Thursday that though the case started de novo (afresh) before her, there were no new facts and circumstances that could warrant her to grant bail to the accused as the charges preferred against them were “serious offences”.
She said as alternative to granting bail to the defendants, she prefer to order accelerated hearing of the case.
Kanu’s co-accused who were denied bail on Thursday were the National Coordinator of IPOB member, Mr. Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi.
They were, in the 11 counts, including treasonable felony, accused of managing an unlawful society, publication of defamatory matter, illegal possession of firearms and improper importation of goods.
Onwudiwe was specifically accused in one of the counts of an act preparatory to an act of terrorism.
All the counts were in connection with the accused persons’ alleged broadcasts on Radio Biafra and agitation for the secession from Nigeria, states in the South-East and South-South zones and other communities in Kogi and Benue states to constitute a Republic of Biafra.
