Folorunsho Alakija Unseats Oprah As Richest Black Woman

Nigerian oil tycoon, Mrs. Folorunsho Alakija, is now the richest black woman in the world with an estimated fortune of $7.3 billion.

Mother of four, Alakija, 62, unseats Winfrey as the richest black woman in the world.

According to Forbes, Oprah Winfrey is worth $2.9 billion. Africa boasts 55 billionaires and they’re worth a staggering $143.88 billion in total, according to pan-African magazine Ventures Africa.
Alakija started her career as a secretary in a bank in the mid 1970s. She then studied fashion in London and returned to Nigeria to start a label, Supreme Stitches. But her biggest break came in oil. In 1993, her company, Famfa Oil, was awarded an oil prospecting licence, which later became OML 127, one of Nigeria’s most prolific oil blocks.

The company owns a 60-per-cent stake in the block, valued at around $7.3 billion, Ventures Africa has reported.

Season of Surprises: Youth Corper win MTN's N50million house

The MTN sponsored weekly TV game show, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire (WWTBAM) took a new dimension over the weekend, as sponsors MTN, rode on this platform to give out a house worth N50million naira to a deserving winner, Miss Omotola Akinsola, as part of its numerous surprise packages for Nigerians, in its on-going Season of Surprises campaign. (Pic above: N50m house winner, Omotola Akinsola (right), brand new car winner, Mrs Iyabode Olasunmbo Sodiya-Dawodu (middle), and Omotola Akinsola’s nominator, Mr  Mayowa Daniel(left), displaying the dummy key to the N50m house won by Omotola Akinsola.)

MTN SEASON OF SURPRISES: Hip-hop act, Sound Sultan (right), poses with Mrs Iyabode Olasunmbo Sodiya-Dawodu(left) as she shows off the key to her brand new KIA, which she won, courtesy of the  “Who Deserves To Be Surprised” TV game show, at Ultima Studios, Lekki, recently.

According to the organizers, many nominations were received in this regard and it took a painstaking process to select the eight nominees with the most compelling stories, to come and have a chance of making it to the hot seat, not only to play for the regular star prize of N10million, but to also have a surprise chance of winning a house worth N50millon, courtesy of MTN.

Of the eight nominees who were invited for the show, Omotola Akinsola, a Youth Corp member and Mrs Iyabode Olasumbo Sodiya-Dawodu were the lucky two, who made it to the hot seat. Omotola Akinsola made it to the hot seat in the first episode and won a sum of N250,000, while Mrs Iyabode Olasumbo Sodiya-Dawodu tried her luck during the second episode and also won a sum of N250,000. With both contestants at par, show host, Frank Edoho, ushered viewers into another anxious moment, as both Omotola and Iyabode were made to play the fastest finger game, so as to determine who wins the star prize of a N50m house.

Omotola’s joy knew no bounds as she was announced winner, after being the fastest of the duo, to answer the N50m question. In an emotion laden voice, Omotola, expressed her happiness as she thanked MTN for surprising her in such a wonderful way. “This surprise largesse is an encouragement for me to do more and to follow my passion to a point that will influence the youth, even at a global level”, Omotola said.

Not done yet, MTN had another surprise package for the runner-up, Mrs Iyabode Olasumbo Sodiya-Dawodu, as show host, Frank Edoho, announced to the delight of the viewers, a surprise gift of a brand new KIA car to be presented to her. While expressing her joy at winning the car gift, an obviously elated Iyabode said it all came as a surprise to her, as she never envisaged it.

The star prize winner, Omotola  Akinsola is a Director at Jumpstart Academy, a Non-Governmental Organisation that supports and currently sponsors more than two hundred and fifty public secondary school students in the area of counseling and tutorials. According to her, she recruits mentors from various universities within the country, to help in achieving her aim of motivating the youth in the society.  Surprisingly, it was for this reason that Omotola was nominated for the “Who Deserves To Be Surprised” show by her friend, Mr  Mayowa Daniel, who said he was moved by the passion, dedication and sacrifice that Omotola has displayed so far, in motivating the youth in the society.

Through its Season of Surprises campaign, MTN, has since the 1st of November 2014, created lot of exciting moments all over the country as the Company continues to unveil various surprise packages for Nigerians.

RCCG donates to hospital

The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Lagos Province 23, with its headquarters at Gbagada, has donated materials worth thousands of naira to the Gbagada General Hospital, Lagos.
The materials, comprising various hospital equipment and beddings, were handed over to the hospital management by the representatives of the province, led by Pastor Brown Oyitso.
Oyitso said the church had been reaching out to the less-privileged as part of its specific programmes and initiative.
“We have handled various projects in hospitals, schools, police stations and communities around us. We have also sunk a number of boreholes, repaired roads, done some street maintenance, and erected street lights.
“The people have also not been left out, as a number of projects affecting them directly have also been carried out. Some of these are training on skills acquisition, examination coaching for students, youth empowerment training, etc.”, he said.
Besides, he said, the church had also granted numerous scholarships and had also sponsored football competitions and provided viewing centres.
“The important testimony, however, is that the Lord has been using these activities to touch the lives of the people and to bring them closer to Him,” Oyitso said.
The gesture, according to him, is also in line with the vision of the General Overseer of the church, Pastor Enoch Adeboye; and the RCCG International philosophy.

Stress may lead to sudden death — Expert

In this interview with MOTUNRAYO JOEL, a consultant psychiatrist, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Dr. Peter Ajiboye, discusses stress and its effects
What is stress?
Stress is a scientific concept which has suffered from the mixed blessing of being too well known and too little understood. Stress in the everyday language is used to connote unpleasant situation. It could also apply to events or situation such as preparing for examination which could have adverse effects on someone.
Medically stress can be defined as situations and conditions, which place an individual under pressure and may involve adjustment to their behaviour and can cause changes which are unpleasant, sometimes maladaptive and even associated with physical changes. It can also refer to a state that occurs when people are faced with events they perceived as endangering their physical or psychological well-being and are unsure of their ability to deal with these events.
What causes stress?
Stress is everywhere and in everyday activity. Major causes include how to survive, how to feed, and interpersonal relationship (between married couples, a boss and his subordinate, colleagues etc). However the causes can also be grouped into three: psychological, social and biological. The psychological causes include things that have to do with life events in people (pleasant or unpleasant) such as marriages, deaths, promotion, success, failure, moving into a new house or building of your own, retirement, children going away from home, loss of job and other social events that impinge on our lives.
Social causes include economic hardship and certain social evils such as threat to personal safety (from Boko Haram, cultism, kidnappers, thieves etc), tribal and ethnic clashes, frustrating traffic delays in most cities, lack of social welfare policies, high rate of poverty, road traffic accidents, increase in substance (drug and alcohol) abuse, high unemployment rate etc.
Biological causes of stress include inherited disorders such as sickle cell anaemia, mental illness in close relatives, metabolic and endocrine disorders such as thyrotoxicosis, diabetes. Others include dangerous infections (HIV, Ebola virus), trauma, neoplasm (cancer), and degenerative disorders.
What are the signs of stress?
With adequate coping, an individual remains unscathed when faced with a stressor. However, if the intensity of the stressful stimulus subdues coping efforts, the individual decompensates and develops features of stress such as anxiety, with autonomic arousal leading to tachycardial or palpitation or racing heart, rapid but shallow breathing (dyspnoea), aches in the back of the neck (muscle tension), tiredness on minimal exertion (fatigability), loss of interest and motivation (paralysis of the will) and inadequate or unrefreshing sleep. Other subtle features which most stressed individuals may not recognise as originating from a stressed body or mind include irritability (for example snapping at people), unexplainable low spirit, a sense of impending doom, poor concentration, and increase frequency of error, poor judgment, and low decisions making ability. All these features are potentially reversible if what is causing the stress (stressor) is removed or controlled.
What is the first action one should take after witnessing these signs?
The person should remove, avoid or control the cause of stress.
What is job stress?
This has to do with stress arising from job related issues such as financial remuneration for basic survival needs. Work also has benefits which in combination can enhance an individual’s sense of worth and self-esteem. Work also provides an opportunity to actualise personal aptitudes and competency allows a situation of social interaction with others (co-workers) in mutually supportive system geared to productivity and confers on life a time-frame structure for the accomplishments of goal. Failed aspirations and unmet needs in any of these areas can lead to job stress. The areas where job stress could arise can be broken down to small bits such as job pressure (security and tension), job satisfaction, intrinsic rewards, interpersonal rewards, extrinsic status rewards (factors relating to income and status), extrinsic opportunity rewards, social support etc.
Why is stress a problem?
This is because if it persists it could result in overt disease (physical or psychological).
Is there a link between stress and illness?
Yes there is.
What are the diseases triggered by stress?
They can be divided into two groups (physical and psychological diseases). The physical disease conditions include hypertension, ulcer of the stomach and intestines, diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease (in which blood supply to the heart is reduced).
Psychological- any psychological disorder can arise when stressor is not controlled or removed. These include anxiety disorders, depression, psychotic disorders and manic-depressive disorder.
How can stress be controlled?
It can be controlled by reducing frequency of stressors- adopt healthy life style, careful and sensible forward planning in conduct of personal affairs and at the societal level. Mobilisation of social and political order in the direction that guarantees good health and satisfactory quality of life.
There is also the need for professional intervention programme to reduce the intensity of the biological responses to stress (e.g. relaxation techniques, meditation techniques, counseling, psychotherapy, and the use of medication).
Is there a link between stress and sudden death?
Yes there is. Some of the disease conditions mentioned above (hypertension, coronary artery disease and even diabetes mellitus) could result in sudden death.
How does stress affect adults, teens and children?
In adults, stress can arise more commonly from those conditions mentioned under the causes of stress. But in teens and children, that period is an adventurous period and can be a crisis period. This is the period children want to be free from parental control and choose role model. It is a period that teenagers experiment and try many things. There is peer pressure and pleasure seeking is common at this stage. There is high risk behaviour among them and this is associated with serious negative consequences. It can take many forms, including drug and alcohol use, getting involved in sexual practices (unwanted pregnancies), self injurious behaviours and reckless driving. Sexually transmitted diseases are also very high among teenagers. All these will affect them adversely and lead to stress.
How can one relax if one is feeling stressed?
A person can engage in physical exercise but more importantly could seek professional intervention where the individual is taken through relaxation techniques, meditation techniques and medication can also be given to relieve tension and help a person to relax.
What can one do to relieve stress?
Reduce frequency of stressors by adopting healthy life style. Talk to a professional where you can ventilate your feelings and emotion and you also get counselled and appropriate treatment will be recommended.
Is stress now different and more dangerous?
Stress is not different from what it used to be but if you say people are exposed to more stressors or stressful conditions and situations, I will say yes. Uncontrolled stress has always been dangerous but may be the difference now is that people are more stressed nowadays than before and we now see more of the consequences than before.
Does chronic stress cause high blood pressure?
Yes, persistent and uncontrolled stress can cause high blood pressure.
Can medicines help lower stress level?
Yes they can, some medications can help reduce the level of tension in an individual, if they are tensed up and can also induce sleep in a person that cannot sleep as a result of stress. All these will invariably lower the stress level but medication is not the ultimate thing in stress management but removing the stressor and building the coping capacity of the individual.

Pics: Corps Member Builds & Tests Drone In Osun, Critics Say It’s Made In China

Osun State Deputy Governor, Mrs.
Titi Laoye-Tomori, among other
dignitaries, watched in admiration
how a drone built by a corps
member posted to Osun State
took off and carried out
surveillance of the parade ground
at the Permanent Orientation
Camp of the National Youth
Service Corps on Monday.
The corps member, Olaolu Ayoola,
a graduate of Computer Science/
Engineering of the Ladoke Akintola
University of Technology,
Ogbomoso, stole the show with
his project during the closing
ceremony of the orientation
course for the 2014 batch ‘C’ of
corps members deployed in the
state.

The drone, which soldiers and
other security agents present at
the event described as a good
one, flew for about 10 minutes
before it landed.

The device, fixed with a
surveillance camera, can stay in
the air for 20 minutes and is
capable of climbing up to 500
metres.

The device with remote control
and 2.4G radio transmitter carried
out live recording of the event,
which he monitored on his black
berry phone.

Ayoola told our correspondent in
an interview that his love for
aeronautics drove him into
building the device.

According to him, apart from
military use, the drone is also
useful in hoisting flags as well as
monitoring ongoing activities in
large farms.

He said, “This type of drone, if
fully developed, can be used by
farmers. You can deploy it to fly
round a farm of about 20 hectares
and you will monitor what is going
on.

“It can also be used to monitor
traffic situation and flooded areas.
I spent over N20,000 to build it,
but I can do something with a
bigger capacity and which will
stay for hours on air if fund is
available.”

. Nigerian Student, NYSC Corper Built Surveillance Drones, Critics Say It’s Made In China.

The story making round in Nigeria is that of an NYSC Corper, Olaolu Ayoola who claimed he built a drone from scratch.
From the look of things, the guy might have succeeded in fooling Nigerians because the drone in question looks like a finished product and not like the ones made from raw materials.

Here is what critics are saying about Ayoola’s invention:

The drone in question is a finished product with remote control and not a prototype because the specifications of the drone – duration, altitude is the same with what you have in the market, the package came from China, he should show us his workshop. I am tired of people going to China to get a customized product and confuse the masses as their inventions. For the records, there are companies selling drone assembly kits online, they will send you the instruction manual to assemble it yourself. It’s likely one of those.

Another critic said:
“I just dey laugh here Ooo my brother, drone full stores here for my neighborhoodyafum, yafum… My question to the smart corper boy is simple, how and where did he get his raw materials from to manufacture his drones components ?A basic chines made toy drone in Chinese stores costs less than $100 US, so why’s this fool of a coper fooling Nigerians back home ?”

Why Do Some Married Ladies Commit Adultery During NYSC?

With the way things are going, married ladies might later be exempted from taking part in NYSC in order to curb the level of immoralities that happen in most NYSC camps. Like the recent case involving a married lady and some guys at the lagos camp. Imagine, the guys sleeping with a married woman and less bothered about the consequences? The world is indeed getting worse by the day.

And according to lady who just finished her youth service, its a normal thing among some married ladies serving. "It happened where I served, some of them were hiding their rings and in the process, they will misplace it. , and everyone were like,""she don get bobo. another one was caught with a guy on d field and was announced in our morning devotion, and later called her hubby 2 cum n hear d gud news and take her home.d tin there is,they should just give them exemption letters that's all.cuz I discovered that,d singles @d camps, are well behaved than those young married ones"

Such ladies are a disgrace to women. Whether married or single. And there are female students who prefer to go for their youth service first before getting married, guess due to this same reason. Cos, many of them don't trust themselves and don't know if they can overcome the temptations they are bound to face in NYSC camps. Many of them have taken NYSC as a means to enough fun and sex romps

Remembering One Of US That Fell In 2011 Election

Tomisin, 24, was posted to Giade Local
Government Area of Bauchi State by the
National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for
his primary assignment after the
orientation exercise at Wailo Camp in
September 2011.
Tomisin, was an indigene of Osun State, he
was among the 200 other corps members
recruited as electoral officers by the
Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC) to cover the 20
Local Government areas in the state. As it
turned out eventually, those of them
posted to the northern parts of Bauchi
State like Katagum, Darazo, Giade,
Dambam Jammare became the biggest
casualties of the senseless riots that
trailed the presidential polls as many of
them were attacked and killed.
According to an oral source,The Batch C,
2010 corps member ran to the police
station in Giade to seek refuge as their
lodge in Giade was attacked. The rioters
attacked the station and overpowered the
policemen on duty before setting the
station on fire. They brought out Tomisin,
a graduate of Computer Science from the
University of Ilorin and about six other
corps members and killed them. Another
account also said that the female corps
members among them were allegedly
raped.
The discovery was corroborated by one of
the rape suspects arrested by the Bauchi
State Police Command and paraded
among the 67 other suspects by the
Commissioner of Police posted to the
state for the general election, according to
an oral account, Tomisin was preparing a
meal of beans when the attackers stormed
the Corpers’ lodge that Sunday afternoon.
“They were carrying big sticks, machetes
and chanting Sai Buhari, Sai CPC,” one of
the corps members who were rescued by
the police said.
But Tomisin and six of his colleagues
made for the police station to escape
being lynched.
The deceased friend who pleaded
anonymity said: “I spoke with him that
morning and asked him to come to Bauchi
to spend the weekend with me. He usually
came to Bauchi to spend the weekend with
me. I asked him to come to Bauchi as
usual. I waited for his call but he did not
call which was unusual. I tried his number
but I could not reach him.
“I went to ECWA church in Bauchi to see a
friend when another friend now called me
to inform me that Tomisin had been killed
in Giade. It was like a joke to me. I was
told that he was at home at the lodge
cooking beans when the mob attacked
them and he ran to the police station. The
policemen tried to disperse the mob but
they refused.
They even fired tear gas at them but they
did not run. They now set the place on fire
and killed Tomisin and the other corps
member.
He described the death of his colleague as
shocking. He said: “We met in camp last
September and became friends. He was a
very lively person. Our last discussion was
that he was coming to Bauchi. His dad was
even trying to get him a job at NNPC.
He also told me that he wanted to go for
his post graduate degree after the
service.”
Tomisin’s friend said he was posted to
both Giade and Bauchi, the state capital as
an electoral officer. “I was surprised to see
two postings in my name so I settled for
Bauchi since it was nearer and it is the
capital. I never knew that it would become
a killing field.”
Tomisin’s friend said that the parents
were devastated by the news.
“I can say that the NYSC is a good scheme
but the implementation is very bad. Corps
members are just posted to places to
serve but there is, in most cases, no
careful plan for their welfare and security.
It is very sad. As for me, I am through
with the service. I am not going back to
Bauchi for now. I will only go to that state
to collect my redeployment letter or
certificate.”

I have been tempted to cheat on my husband many times - Omotola

In a new interview with Vanguard, star actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde said she's been tempted to cheat on her husband of over 17 years many times but never went through with it because of all she stood to lose.
"Absolutely. I have been tempted many times to cheat on my husband by men I really liked. But when you think of what you stand to lose, the destruction of all you have labored to build, when you weigh all the options, you are left to conclude that it is not worth the trouble. I know some women will find this somewhat objectionable, but if they want to be truthful to themselves, they will agree with me that, as married women, we have all faced moments that I have just described.” Omotola said

Agbani Darego's stunning dress to the Miss World 2014 pageant

Former Miss World Agbani Darego stuns in this dress by Nigerian designer Meena at the Miss World 2014 pageant happening this evening Dec. 14th in London

Darego hails from Abonnema in Rivers state. She was born into a family of eight children and was raised in D-line.[6] At ten, Darego was sent to boarding school in a bid to shield her from her mother who had breast cancer. Darego's mother died two years later, and her daughter has spoken of how the loss prepared her for the future. As a teenager, Darego longed to be a model, and despite her conservative father's wishes, she auditioned for the M-Net Face of Africa modelling competition, but was not chosen as a finalist. After finishing her Secondary education, she attended University of Port Harcourt where she studied Computer Science and Mathematics.[7]

In 2001, Darego was crowned Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria. Contrary to popular belief, Darego did not replace Valerie Peterside after the latter was dethroned, as she had won Miss Nigeria. A few months later she was a contestant at Miss Universe, and became the first Nigerian to place among the top 10 semi-finalists, finishing seventh overall. She was the only Black African|Black semi-finalist that year, and the only one to wear a maillot as opposed to a bikini during the swimsuit competition.
In November that year, she became the first black African to claim the Miss World title (Although past winners such as Penelope Coelen and Anneline Kriel are South African, they are of European descent, and Antigone Costanda, who represented Egypt in 1954 is of Greek heritage). Darego's victory was widely welcomed in her home country, and her one year tenure included goodwill trips and scheduled appearances on behalf of the pageant, and a national honour of MFR.
Prior to winning MBGN, Darego featured in print commercials for boutique chain Collectables, and following her stint at Miss Universe was invited by Naomi Campbell to participate in Frock 'n' Roll - a charity fashion show in Barcelona and soon negotiated a modelling deal with Donald Trump's management to establish links with modelling agencies in America.[8] Shortly after her reign as Miss World she was represented by the London and Paris branches of Next Model Management and landed a three-year contract with L'Oréal, becoming only the second Black model to accomplish this feat after Vanessa Williams, and was photographed by Annie Leibovitz for Vogue. Other brands she has modelled for include Avon, Christian Dior, Sephora, Target, and Macy’s. Darego has also appeared in Elle, Marie Claire, Allure, Trace, Stitch, Cosmopolitan, and Essence magazines, working with numerous designers including Oscar de la Renta, Marc Bouwer, Tommy Hillfiger, Ralph Lauren, and Gianfranco Ferre.
In her homeland Darego has appeared in advertising campaigns for hair care brand Gentle Touch with supermodel Oluchi, and is currently the face of Arik Air.[9] She has also graced the covers of Complete Fashion, Mania.,ThisDay Style,Genevieve,True Love, and TW Magazine.

Darego has judged numerous pageants, and fashion and modelling competitions including Miss England 2002,[10] Mr. Scotland 2002,[11] and Elite Model Look Nigeria 2012.[12] In 2010 she launched a style and fashion reality show Stylogenic on Nigerian television, and three years later announced her denim range, AD by Agbani Darego, which will include jeans, dresses, and bags
